From a 1988 DOS word processor to a five-platform suite

Most office suites arrive as one product with a version number attached. This one arrived as a lineage. Its earliest ancestor was a DOS word processor that shipped in 1988, and more than thirty years later the same family of code covers word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and PDF work, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS at once. The scale is not a marketing footnote either: monthly active devices run into the hundreds of millions. The personal edition is free for individual users, and the functions most people touch every day are not locked behind that line. Updates still come on a quarterly rhythm, and as of September 2026 the Windows desktop build sits in the 12.0 series.

Four components, one working day

The document component carries what a report actually needs: mixed text and images, styles with an automatic table of contents, headers and footers, and review comments that survive a round trip between machines. The spreadsheet component does the arithmetic — formulas, pivot tables, charts — and recent builds added watermarking plus the ability to attach a data source straight from several database engines instead of exporting an intermediate file first. The presentation component is where the formula editor got its overhaul: it now converts between LaTeX syntax and a professional typesetting format in both directions, and the bundled subject-specific formula templates are a genuine shortcut for lecture handouts and academic reports. The PDF component reads, edits and converts, and a manual of several hundred pages comes back as an editable document that still carries its table-of-contents bookmarks, so you land on a chapter instead of scrolling until you find one.

The files people send you, and work that follows you

Reading and writing the formats colleagues actually attach is the unglamorous baseline, and it holds up: a document, a workbook or a slide deck that arrives by mail opens and edits without a conversion step, and the layout survives the trip between platforms with few surprises. Sign in with the same account and the cloud store turns into continuity — a proposal half-written on Windows can be finished on a phone, and a clipboard that syncs between devices lets you paste a paragraph from one machine into another instead of mailing it to yourself.

Templates, and editing together

The template library is the part that quietly saves the most time. It holds finished layouts for official notices, resumes, course slides, posters and financial statements, and a large set of the basic ones costs nothing: start from a frame, fill in your own content, skip the argument with yourself about formatting. On Linux there is a separate free section for the document and courseware templates that public-sector offices actually use. Collaboration grows out of the same cloud store — online co-editing, a version history you can roll back, comments and mentions. The keyboard shortcuts stay close enough to the office suites people already know that switching over costs almost nothing in muscle memory.

On Linux it is often the practical answer

For Linux users the value is easier to state plainly: official deb and rpm packages, mainstream distributions covered, the personal edition free, and none of the four core components restricted in what it can do. Two interface layouts are offered — a familiar ribbon arrangement and a plainer toolbar — so nobody has to relearn where things live. The spreadsheet component also picked up multi-threaded loading for large files, which is why scrolling through tens of thousands of rows stays responsive instead of turning into a slideshow.

What stays free, and who it suits

The basics are free for individuals. Cloud storage, AI-assisted writing and the deeper collaboration features come with a membership, and you can pick that up only when you need it — for writing documents, building spreadsheets and laying out slides, the free tier is not a trial. Students doing coursework, office workers assembling a weekly report, and anyone working in an environment that mandates domestic software all get something usable out of the same install. The package sits between roughly one hundred and two hundred megabytes, lighter than plenty of suites of comparable scope, and it starts quickly. Light and dark themes follow the system setting, which matters more than it sounds when a screen is in front of you all day. If what you want is one suite that installs small, opens fast and runs on every platform you own, this is a low-drama choice.
