Msty: local and hosted models in a single window

Summary

Two engines inside one window run an open model after a click, more than 12 hosted providers can be added with your own key, and a conversation may change models halfway through - or split into panes and answer the same question twice.

Local models keep a conversation private; hosted models are simply more capable. Most people end up treating that as a choice to be made, and installing a separate tool for each side of it. Msty - now sold under the name Msty Studio - tries to take the choice out of the system altogether. It is a closed-source desktop application whose core costs nothing and needs no account, and it carries two local inference engines inside its own window, so an open model can be running after a single click. Alongside them it accepts more than 12 hosted providers, and local and remote models share the same window: a conversation can change models halfway through and carry on from there. The maker's phrase for the result is zero lock-in.

Split chats comparing several models side by side

For anyone who would rather not touch a terminal, the built-in engines remove almost all of the ritual: no runtime to install beforehand, no commands to type, download and talk. The program covers the three desktop systems, with separate installers for machines built on the newer in-house chip design and on the older one. Privacy is written into the defaults as well - storage is local first, and the transcript, the models and the settings all stay on the device, with no usage measurements and no tracking; with the network unplugged the local models keep working as usual. The hosted half runs on a key you supply, whichever provider you prefer, and the hybrid habit - sensitive talk at home, heavy work in the distance - needs no extra configuration at all.

What lifts it above the crowd of chat front-ends is a pair of interaction ideas. The first is Split Chats: one keystroke and the window divides into side-by-side panes the way a browser handles tabs, and each pane holds a different model - one local, one remote - so the same question goes out to both and the answers grow next to each other. Comparing tone, depth and accuracy no longer means switching windows, and the context of the conversation is not thrown away. The second is Knowledge Stacks: drop a PDF in, or paste the address of a video, and the model can use them as the basis of its answer straight away. Nobody has to work out vector stores and embedding models first, and the replies carry citations back to the source - the entire retrieval chain compressed into two moves, pile it in and ask.

Deeper in, Msty treats everything involved in using a model as an asset that can be managed. Around 230 default prompts can be installed and sorted into a library; several configured role assistants may join one thread and take turns approaching the question from different sides; an agent mode pushes the chat into multi-step work that calls tools; and a context workbench added in a later release collects files, pages, video and audio into reusable context collections.

Some advanced abilities - the version in the browser, more elaborate flows - sit behind a paid subscription, and that is the real difference between this program and its open-source neighbours. The code cannot be audited and the application cannot be hosted on your own machine, which is worth settling in your mind before choosing it. The current release arrived on 24 July 2026. Three kinds of user end up here: the one who refuses to open a terminal, the one who compares models for the pleasure of it, and the one whose files are too sensitive for a distant service. Measured by smoothness, though, folding local and remote models into one window and turning model comparison into a side-by-side conversation still has few rivals.
