OpenToonz: the 2D animation suite Ghibli helped shape is now open source

Summary

OpenToonz is a 2D animation package derived from Toonz, a professional tool customised at Studio Ghibli for years. It covers scan-and-paint, palettes, xsheet and timeline editing, node-based compositing and an effects SDK, and its New BSD source makes it free for commercial work too.

A tool with a production pedigree

OpenToonz is a 2D animation package with an unusual family tree. It descends from Toonz, a professional tool built by the Italian company Digital Video, and that origin explains most of what the program does. Toonz was customised inside Studio Ghibli for years and took part in nearly every stage of the studio's scan-and-paint work: cleaning up scanned drawings, setting colour, and assembling the result digitally. Very few free programs can claim that kind of history.

In 2016 Dwango, working with Digital Video and Ghibli, released the software as open source. The source is under a New BSD licence, so commercial use is as free as hobby use, and a studio can build on it without asking anyone first. What was once a licensed tool sold to production houses became something anyone can install.

Scanning paper drawings

The workflow it implements is the industrial one rather than a shortcut. Drawings can be made directly as raster art inside the program, or drawn with the Toonz vector engine that comes with it, so a project can mix the two where that makes sense. Paper drawings go through GTS, the scanning tool bundled with the program. GTS handles sequence scanning keyed to inbetween numbering, which means a numbered stack is read in order rather than one file at a time, and it offers four scanning modes for different kinds of line art. Scan parameters can be stored and reused, so the second batch of a scene does not have to be set up from scratch.

Palettes and the colour department

Colour is where the palette system earns its place. Image data and palette are kept as separate things, so changing one colour updates every place in the shot that uses it. On a scene with dozens of drawings and a late note from the director, that separation is the difference between one edit and dozens. It is also how a production keeps a character's colour consistent across a sequence without hunting through individual frames.

Two ways to read a timeline

The timeline can be displayed as an xsheet, the exposure sheet traditional animators already know, or as a conventional timeline with layers. Having both means the same project can be read by someone who thinks in exposure counts and by someone who thinks in keyframes, without converting anything. A timing change made in one view is visible in the other.

Effects as a node tree

Effects are wired as a node tree in the schematic view. Blur, glow and keying are therefore done inside the program instead of in a second application, and the result can be inspected step by step. An effects SDK is published for third parties, and the extensions built with it include one that restyles footage with deep learning and one that reproduces the stray light of old film. Bone and deformation tools cover cutout-style tweening, and a script console is there for work that has to be repeated rather than performed once.

Licence, platforms and the cost of starting

As of September 2026 the newest release in the project's repository is 1.8, published on 19 June 2026. Official packages are offered for Windows and macOS, while Linux users mostly depend on builds put together by the community. The GTS scanning tool runs on Windows only, which matters if the plan is to digitise paper. The program is dense, and the first week costs patience, because the vocabulary of the interface comes from production practice rather than from a tutorial. What it returns is a complete pipeline at no cost, which is rare in this class of software.

A free tool that can run a full traditional 2D pipeline, and that carries a real production history, is a rare combination. The price is a professional interface and a steep start. Anyone whose goal is only a small vector tween might be happier beginning with something lighter.
