Vercel: connect a repository and it deploys itself, starting free on Hobby

Summary

Vercel is a deployment platform that attaches to a Git repository and builds plus publishes on every push, so no server or pipeline has to be maintained; the zero cost Hobby tier already bundles a global content network and traffic insights.

Push the code, switch to the browser, and see it already running. The length of that stretch decides whether a change feels cheap enough to make often.

What happens after the repository is connected

Vercel starts by taking a repository. Once authorisation is done, the platform runs the build and the publish itself, and every later push to the main branch triggers another round. Move a change onto a branch instead and a separate preview address appears, so colleagues or clients can look at the result before anything is merged. For a project with several people on it, this turns ask someone to ship my work into push it and look.

The build step is folded into continuous integration and delivery, so no pipeline script has to be written by hand; runtimes, caching and asset delivery are arranged by the platform. A network spread across regions pushes static assets to nodes near the visitor, while the dynamic parts of a page are handled by functions executed on demand. None of this is loud on a personal project, but the difference between elastic and fixed shows up the moment traffic jumps.

Security and observability folded into the base

A web application firewall, global delivery and traffic performance insights all sit in the entry tier, which means the routine operational work is taken over in advance. For a small team with no dedicated operations person, capabilities that are simply there by default save far more trouble than ones bolted on later; traffic sources, response times and error ratios are readable in a panel instead of requiring a monitoring stack of one's own.

Pricing splits into three tiers. The one aimed at personal projects and early stages costs nothing and includes automatic build and deploy, global delivery, the firewall and traffic insights. The next tier is priced per seat and stacks usage allowances, fixed rate delivery with peak protection, spending management, collaboration seats and cold start prevention on top, with custom domains included. The highest tier is quoted on demand, aimed at organisations with explicit requirements around security, performance, observability and service commitments.

Why it often becomes the default choice

Beyond hosting, Vercel is the creator of the Next.js frontend framework, and framework and platform are pushed by the same team. Deploying that kind of project there is a first class, officially supported path: routing, rendering mode and build output all line up. In the past two years the emphasis has clearly shifted toward agents, with a model gateway, sandboxed runtime environments and durable orchestration on offer, so an application can keep calling models, running tasks and correcting itself after it has shipped.

What deserves attention is the boundary: this is a hosting platform, not a full backend. Data persistence, user accounts and push messaging usually still come from third party services, and billing follows usage, so projects with an unclear traffic shape should watch allowance consumption. Treating it as the landing point and delivery layer for a frontend, with everything else assembled as needed, is the natural way to use it.

The value of a deployment platform is a shorter feedback loop: once a change can be seen within minutes, the density of iteration follows on its own.
